    This page provides pre-session instructions for gaining access to this website and other requirements.

    • Pre-session Preparation

      'Virtual Worlds for Teaching and Learning' face to face workshop at University of Queensland

      Please do the following at least one day *before* coming to the session.

      1. Self sign up for an account at (note: you can skip this step if you already have a working account on this website).

      • Go to the sign-up form at
      • When filling out the form - You must use your UQ email address in the email boxes but you can choose a username and password (but please do not use your normal UQ password). Remember to write down what you used.
      • A confirmation email will be sent to your email address. It contains a confirmation link. Click the link to confirm your account. Note: it can take up to 15 minutes for this email to arrive, in the mean time you can continue at step 3. (If the email not arrived after 30 minutes, please email the workshop coordinator).
      • Be sure to write down your chosen username and password and bring this to the session.

      2. Self enrol yourself into the course 'Virtual Worlds' on The 'virtual worlds' course area will house most of the materials we will use in the workshop.

      • From the home page click on 'Virtual Worlds'
      • Then click the 'enrol me' button (you only need to do this step once, after which you will be allowed straight in)

      3. Self sign up for an avatar account on Second Life.

      • Follow the process at
      • Be sure to write down your chosen avatar username and password and bring this to the session.

      4. Please send your Second Life avatar 'name' via email to the workshop coordinator (so you can be added to relevant access lists before the session starts).

      5. Optional - To use your own laptop in a workshop session you will need to:

      1. Install a special 'Viewer' software. It is recommended that you install the 'SL & OpenSim' version of the viewer as it allows you to connect to both Second Life and Open Sim based virtual worlds (if you already have a Viewer Installed then you can use it). You can obtain the FireStorm software from
        The download links appear on the right-hand side of the page. Choose 'SL & OpenSim' to suit your operating system. You will be prompted to save the file.
      2. Ensure you can successfully connect to the EduRoam wireless network on campus. Instructions for connecting to EduRoam is at
