Pre-session preparation for University of Queensland face-to-face workshops. Includes details of how to access this website and how obtain a Second Life account (for virtual worlds sessions).

What is elearning? Blended Learning? Small group discussion – report to whole group – develop a shared understanding of what is meant by elearning and blended learning. Discuss other terminology – online learning; flexible learning, connectivity between people, group study support, social networks (facebook, linked etc). Develop a shared concept map.

Explore a range of examples of elearning. Consideration of how these are consistent with a shared understanding of elearning, beliefs, cultural etc:  Expand concept map to include these.
Initial discussion of how they might use elearning for participants own activities. A mix of presentation and small group activities.

Introduction to Tools for eLearning: Management Systems (Moodle, Sakai, BlackBoard), collobrative tools (Mediawiki, discussion forums and message boards - phpBB), Portfolios (Mahara), Social Media tools (Blogs - Wordpress, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube).

Establish accounts for the various tools using participants' own email accounts.

Introduction to Learning Management Systems (LMS)

The philosophy underpinning Moodle.
The pedagogical approaches supported by Moodle.
Tools in Moodle.
Examples of Moodle courses.
Moodle hands-on.

Establish self-study goals. Developing individual study plans. Discussion of elearning for participant's particular contexts. Begin development of individual or small group project.

Collaborative and Group eLearning.

Explore what is meant by collaborative learning. Designing activities for collaborative learning, Explore tools for supporting discussion (forums,chat/wiki), reflection, (blogs/journals) and interaction (virtual class platforms: Adobe Connect/Wimba/elluminate/BigBlueButton) that support collaborative learning. Exploring what collaborative learning means for the particular context of participants and how to support a collaborative and productive online community.

Exploring designs, applications and tools. Further discussion of collaborative learning for participant context.

Exploring pedagogies and technologies to support online problem based learning. A range of pedagogies and technologies will be explored through modelling practice, focusing on design for learning. Exploring what problem-based learning means for participants' context. A mix of presentation and small group activities.

Exploring enquiry based e-learning.

Designing for elearning for Large Classes.
A range of pedagogies and technologies will be explored through modelling practice, focusing on design for learning.

Audience/student response systems, Clickers, votapedia, mobiles/ipads, integrating online learning, Just-in-time-teaching. Active teaching in lectures, encouraging engagement, group learning. Classroom management tools - DyKnow.

This session will introduce you to podcasts and lecture recording, and suggest ways in which you might use them to support your teaching and learning activities.

Designing for elearning: Virtual worlds.

Exploring virtual worlds in education. A range of pedagogies and technologies will be explored through modelling practice, focusing on design for learning. Second Life and Open Sim, tour of  Transforming Assessment island and other educational resources. Second Life & Open Sim hands on in lab. A mix of presentation and small group activities.

Designing for elearning: mobile learning.

A range of pedagogies and mobile technologies will be explored through modelling practice, focusing on design for learning. Includes mobile phones/smart phones, ipads. Anywhere/any time learning. Suitable learning activities. Clinical practice/students on placements, reflective learning, ethics.

A mix of presentation and small group activities.

Participant Presentations day: to show case the materials participants have developed in self study time over the course of the program. This involves each participant presenting, sharing and discussing.
